Grey screen after re-install fail

Hi all,

I'm trying to flatten and re-install a 2007 Intel MacBook in order to sell it.

I managed to boot from a Snow Leopard DVD and erase the drive using disk utility. The machine rebooted and started the fresh install.

It then hung for over an hour on '27 minutes remaining', and then decided to switch itself off!!

Now when I power on I only get a grey screen!

I'm doing this install via an external dvd drive over FW, as the internal optical drive is goosed.

I've tried booting the mac into safe mode - nothing.

I've also tried holding down option key as I boot - this does give me the option of booting from OSX DVD. When I click on the disc icon it hangs some more, for maybe 5 minutes or so before returning to the grey screen and cranking the fans up full.

Any other suggestions I can try??

Many thanks

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), Samsung Galaxy SII
