My iMac currently runs on OS X 10.5.8 and I need to upgrade to 10.6 Snow Leopard. I know that I can purchase the disc from Apple, but when I called, I discovered that my technical support has expired so I can't call them without paying £35 for a support package. Is there another way I can buy 10.6 from Apple? I'd rather not pay £100 + on Amazon.co.uk...

Unfortunately, for purchasing from Apple, the only way to purchase a v10.6 Snow Leopard disc is to contact Apple.
In the US you have to call Apple, 1-800-MY-APPLE and purchase the DVD for $20.
In the UK, call Apple at 0871 508 4400, ask for sales, the support techs cannot help.
Carolyn, the UK number is from someone in the UK who says it is correct.
I realize that. They still have to contact Apple regardless.
I am just trusting they gave the right number 😝
Maybe one day I will try making a list of country numbers to post, but by that time no one will want SL anyway.

All sorted, spoke to a great sales rep (UK number: 0800 048 0408...perhaps there's a couple of different lines!), and will be on Snow Leopard as soon as the disc arrives.

However the 0800 number is free, while the 0871 number is premium-rate.

1-800 is a toll free area code in the US.
If I upgrade 10.5.8 to 10.6.3 do I have to reinstall all the programms that I have already installed by now?

A standard installation of 10.6.3 over 10.5.x will replace only system components; it will not touch personal data, preferences or applications (other than the core Mac ones such as iTunes, QT, Mail and Safari).
The main change is that it strips out all code support for the PPC chips (G series), and will run only on Intel.
When installing, be sure to select Rosetta from the optional installs; it's a code translator for running applications originally written for PPC syatems (AppleWorks, MS office up to 2004, many Adobe apps and numerous device drivers).
Yes there will be software incompatibilities and some drivers for older printers and particularly scanners will need updating.

I can't emphasise enough the importance of having a backup before beginning any upgrade. Preferably a bootable clone of the current system.
99% of installations go smoothly, but there's always the chance of a previously unnoticed fault or a file system irregularity on the HD causing problems. So do please backup first.
(You should in any case always have a backup in case of hardware failure).
