Transfer of my iMovie '09 library to my external hard drive

I am still using iMovie '09 and I want to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Question is.. How do I go about it? Is it also possible that everytime I will import a new video, it goes directly to my external hard drive?

Also, what should be the format of my hard drive so its compatible with iMovie?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5), iMovie '09

The format of your external drive must be Mac OS Extended (journaled). Let me know if you need instructions for how to do this in Disk Utility.

When you import a new video, you can set your external drive as the target on the import screen.

All moves should be done in iMovie. See this User Tip for details.
