How to I remove an ipad app stuck in "installing" mode

I have an app (YP Local... version 3.8.1, released October 10th, 2012) that's "stuck" in "installing" mode. It's been this way now since the 10th. Nothing I can do will make it go away. It's not an installed app (searching for "YP" returns nothing).

I've tried:

  • Removing it from Apps in iTunes and syncing the iPad, but it's still in the App Update page.
  • Restarting the iPad.
  • Manually installing all other YP... apps on the app store, and removing them, but that doesn't help.

I'm not sure what else I can try.

Any suggestions?

TIA, Steve

I post this boilerplate response several times a day, every day. All of these "fixes" have worked for other users in the past. They may not work for you, but you can give them a try.

Ignore anything that you have already tried.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.

If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.

Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.

You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again. Try swiping across the progress bar as well.

You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your app preferences and device settings again.

If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

Consider them ignored!

Done, and resolved. I have no idea why I didn't think of this before. Thanks!!!

Demo:

I came across your fix on a stuck app I had on my new iPad. Note the HAD and now your suggestion has fixed it.

I had tried several other suggestions that I found but none of them worked until I found yours and tried it Thank YOU so much for putting that suggestion out here. I wasn't even going to sign up for the Apple Support but wanted to be able to login and thank you for helping me out!!! I had to work down your list but the third suggestion was the charm.

Now my "Pages" app is installed correctly, not black and unable to be deleted, doesn't say "waiting" and is now ready to be used. Woooo Hooooo! Frustration is out the door and life can go on as usual. 🙂

You are an app saver and a lifesaver.

Well Demo I tried all your options, all of them excellent but unfortunately none of them solved my problem. I could remove the app from my iPad by getting it to wiggle and using the X to delete the app, however when I sync'ed my iPad again iTunes would attempt to install it again.

I suspect that when I downloaded the original app, something happened and only a partial download occurred. In the Apps list in iTunes the problem app had two options - "install" and "will install'. And no matter which option I chose, iTunes would install it on my iPad. The app would never open, it would just turn black,

Since I did not want the app, I took a drastic approach, that worked for me:

1. I deleted the app on my iPad by getting it to wiggle and deleting the app.

2. I found and renamed the app on my windows based PC.

3. I re-sync'ed my iPad and iTunes said it could not find the problem app and continued to sync.

4. The app was gone forever and not taking up 1.6 gigs on my iPad.

Here is the file I renamed "(name of app).ipa" found in the directory - ...\iTunes Music\Mobile Applications.

I would recommend this only as a last resort - but it worked for me.

Thanks for your great post. It encouraged me to finally solve my problem.

Ok-ok - One more post then coffee for me. My wife had the elegant solution.

The problem is with the app that was downloaded to your computer. So, lets force it to download the app again to your computer. First delete the app from your idevice - in my instance it was the iPad. Second, on the idevice open the App Store and on the bottom of the screen you will see "Purchased". On this list you should find your problem app with a cloud next to it. Download the a fresh version of the application from the icloud to your idevice. The app should be fine now on your idevice, Sync again with iTunes on your computer and your refreshed app will get uploaded to your computer.
