Software Update
Software update starts, then update window with available updates never shows. Updater appears still open in dock, clicking on it does nothing. This has now happened on 2 computers I oversee. Any suggestions?

Step one is to create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists
Not workin when logged into general user account/ not working when logged in as admin either.
…create a new admin user account.
Thank you, I will try this. I will also appreciate you not yelling at me.
I never yell at moms.😉
New admin user account....same thing; loads but no update window shows.
Boot with your original admin account, pop in the Snow Leopard install disc, restart holding down the C key, reinstall the OS, launch Disk Utility (in /Utilities), repair permissions, and restart. Try Software Update.
Sorry to say, this didn't work either. Still no updates window.
Then, only other thing to try is to install SL onto an empty volume. On first boot, just set it up using the same username & password combo you're currently using, w/o doing any migration, and see if SU works. If so, then update to 10.6.8. If it still works, then launch the Migration System app in /Utilities and migrate only your apps, nothing else. Now, you'll have to do the tedious resetting of preferences for the original, but borked account, and transferring of data from your old user account to the new one. If everything still works, backup this new volume and then migrate the other user accounts.
my dear vigilant friend, thanks for all your suggestions but I have determined the only way to resolve this situation is to go home, drink a bottle of wine, and pass the problem along to the regional tech guy on Monday. I'll pass on your suggestion as well. Thanks again for all your help. Cheers!
I recommend Crown Royal or Jack Daniels. Much more effective. 😉
BTW, now you reveal that these might be associated with school district machines. That's a whole other barrel of fish. Let us know how it turns out for you.
Going the Rum route, so many more possibilities. 🙂
Yep, school district. I just don't have the time to keep going with this when I have another 285 machines to deal with. Thank god the district updated a short time ago and I only have a few of the old crapples to deal with (although I think I'll keep the 2 indigos working, they make me laugh just looking at them)
Thanks again and I'll let you know how this resolves.
So simple it's embarrassing ...... after a wipe and reimage on 3, I was saved by.....
Hard Drive~Library~Preferences~ (then delete any Software Update items such as com.apple.softwareUpdate.plist)
Works like a charm.
