iMessage "read receipt" turned off in Message Settings, but it still is showing

I have an iPhone 4 with OS 6 and as the titled says, having issues with read receipt. I have in the message settings turned the "allow others to see when you have read their messages" to off, yet "read" still pops up on their phone when i read their message. I had it turned off before i upgraded to 6 and didnt have this problem, only showed "delivered" on their phone and never switched to "read". Now since i've done the update, no matter if i have it off or on, "read" still shows up on their phone, and i cant figure it out. I have set next to my girlfriend and watched "read" pop up, as i was staring at my phone looking at the read receipt showing "off". I cant figure this out, anyone have this issue or a solution? It just bothers me for some reason when people can see if i have read their messages and maybe havent responded right away. Thanks for any help
