My apple account was made way back in the day with a gmail account. I signed up for a free @me account with my iPhone 4s. Is there a way to get a matching @icloud.com account? I tried sending myself an email to that account but it doesn't work. However I am able to recieve iMessages and FaceTime calls to that account, just not send email nor receive email from @icloud.

To be honest your me and icloud is the same account, just with different aliases.
So yøu will be able to have people to send mails to both, but receive those at same place.
When you send youself - me.com is used cause account is still same, just has two names.
New accounts are created with icloud.com and everyone wants me.com or mac.com and can't get.
You should. I just got mine.
Go to settings, icloud, account, advanced-mail, and default account. When mine was added that area was no long gray. After selecting the@me account, the @icloudwas underneath it.
Yes they are just linked. Any old @me emails that are sent to you will be fwd to your at icloud.
