I have just bought a MACBook Pro but I can't read any SD cards

I have just bought a MACBook Pro but I can't read any SD cards they work via my camera but not via the onboard slot or via usb reader how can I test the hardware is working correctly.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

what brand of camera do you have? and what is the model of the SD cards?

Do you have your Finder > Preferences set to display external drives on the desktop and/or in the sidebar? By default, Finder does neither.
