I've recently moved to OSX for my development platform. I've installed the Server.app from the app store and need to start creating my development sites. The problem I'm having is that my 1TB USB 3.0 drive is not being seen by the Server.app's storage tab, thus not able to create website storage there. Can anybody please point me in the correct direction?!

External Storage doesn't have much to do with server. You can just point to your external hard drive when creating new website in the server app...

Thanks, but that's the whole issue I have... I only have what's available in the Storage tab in the hardware section of my MBPr. It only shows the "Macintosh HD" in that tab and that's the only device to select when creating a new website and specifying to user another location to store the files...
I have the USB drive available and am actively doing file transfers etc to that drive. It's just not showing in the Server.app and that's a show stopper when you only have a small SSD, lol... O_o
A website doesn't take too much space, so why not host the sites on your internal hard drive and use your USB storage as a Time Capsule destination?
Well for one, it is the theory of the issue at hand but I also do a number of very large websites with many many files including subversion, ESP files and other dynamic image caches etc. that quickly eat up my space.
I have a simple Samsung 3TB hard drive (PartNumber: HX - DU020EC/GW) which works like a sunshine with every aspect of Server.app right out of the box, so it must have something to do with your hardware, but make no mistake: The Samsung HD is very basic and was very cheap.
I had a Promise Pegasus R4 with all of it's Raid features, but it didn't corporate with the Server app...
I'm currently using a MacBook Pro with Retina, then USB to a Western Digital Passport 1TB USB 3.0 drive (no hub in-between). Are you using a Mac Pro, iMac or MacBook?
Have you updates your MacBook Pro to 10.8.2 already and server 2.1.1? You can check by just opening the App Store and looking in the updates section.
I too have a MacBook Pro (old model).
Yes. OSX is at 10.8.2 and server is at 2.1.1 (127.19). I know that the recent changes in OSX server apps being moved and/or removed has caused a lot of people headaches... but I haven't seen any documentation on this subject from Apple or forums...
Did you format the partition using Disk Utility? I repartitioned mine when I bought it using the format Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
The WD drive is formated as ExFAT. I just tried a spare USB thumb drive and formated it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and IT WORKED! Bravo!
I'll be transferring files and testing... back shortly!

Hurray! We have success! So the answer is that only drives formatted in the MacOS Extended format work within the Server.app. Props to Mark23 for his indirectly direct answer to adding USB drives to OSX server! 😉
I'm very happy that it's all a little more clear now 🙂
