How can I setup outlook.com to sync email across my Macs?

I realise outlook.com and hotmail are pop not imap but understand that ActiveSync means emails read on an iOS device show as read on other iOS devices. I also understand PC users can set it up so that email read on one system shows as read on another. How can I set it up like that in Apple Mail?

ActiveSync is a protocol that is specifically designed for mobile device use. Macs use the Exchange Web Services protocol instead of ActiveSync when connecting to Exchange.

Since you are using Hotmail, not Exchange, this all means that you will not be able to sync this email across Macs. You will need to use POP.

If you switch to iCloud, Gmail, AOL or Yahoo! mail you can use IMAP protocol to sync between all devices you own, PC, Mac or iOS.
