My iphone 5 pictures won't import properly to Aperture - software says it's an unsupported image format. Any ideas on how to solve this? is this an aperture issue or an iphone issue?

What version of Aperture and OS are you on? I don't have a 5 but a 4s with IOS 6 is not having any problems.
The images were shot using the Apple Camera Software, not a third party app like 645Pro for example?
Assuming you have the latest Aperture running what happens if you import using Image Capture and look at the files with Preview?
I am having the same issue. Neither Aperture nor iPhoto will import the photos from my iPhone 5. They see the device but they're not loading the photos.
