If it is already connected, unplug the printer's USB cable from the Time Capsule as well as your Mac since it will just confuse matters.

To add the printer to your wireless network, the printer must first "join" that network. That is sometimes accomplished with a printer's front panel setting but I do not see one in the C4780's documentation.

When you print to that printer wirelessly, you will need to select a different printer in any OS X Print dialog box. It may not exist yet, which means you have to add the printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan. Read this to determine how to do that:

Mac OS X v10.6: How to connect a wireless-capable printer to your AirPort network

If all goes well the Mac will "see" the printer as an available wireless printer, automatically select the appropriate driver, and add the printer to Print & Scan.

When attempting to print to this newly created wireless printer queue, and you select the printer that you use when the printer is connected with a USB cable to your Mac, it won't find the printer. This is probably what you have been experiencing. A different connection method, e.g. wired vs. wireless, is a completely different printer as far as the Mac is concerned.

Good show.

... I plugged the USB cable into the Time Capsue...Do I have to do this or can i go completely wirless?

To be technically accurate, "wireless" means it should work without any USB cable. OS X attempts to make the connection method appear seamless, so you don't have to care how it is attached. If you unplug its USB cable and it still works, great. If not, you might have to add the "wireless" printer.

This is what I meant by:

Hi,

An HP Full Feature Software is not available for Mountain Lion, therefore the Wireless configuration is tricky and cannot be done through the software.

To connect the printer to your wireless network you will need to create a temporary wireless ad hoc connection, then the wireless connection to your router can be configured via the EWS page:

Step one: Restore the printer's network default settings

  1. Touch the ATM button (User uploaded file ) next to Wireless / Scan .
  2. Touch the ATM button (User uploaded file ) next to Wireless Menu .

  3. Touch the ATM button (User uploaded file ) next to Wireless Settings .

  4. Use the up and down ATM buttons (User uploaded file ) to select Restore Network Defaults , and then press OK .

  5. Touch the ATM button (User uploaded file ) next to Yes to confirm your selection.

Step two: Networkly connect the Mac to the printer by creating a temporary ad-hoc connection

  1. From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
  2. Click Join other network.
  3. Click Show Networks.
  4. Select the printer's SSID, it should be listed as HPSETUP or should contain HP or C4700 within its name.
  5. Click Connect
  6. Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.

Step three: Connect the printer to your router via the EWS page

  1. Open Safari.
  2. Click the Bookmarks icon (User uploaded file)
  3. Click Bonjour.
  4. Double click the printer name, the EWS page appears.
  5. Open the Networking tab.
  6. From the left pane select Wireless.
  7. Click the Start Wizard button and follow the steps to connect the printer to your router.

Step four: Reconnect the Mac to your router

  1. From the Mac, click the Wi-Fi icon.
  2. Click Join other network.
  3. Click Show Networks.
  4. Select your router SSID.
  5. Click Connect
  6. Allow two-three minutes to fully establish the network connection.

Now the printer should be connected to your network.

Open Print & Scan, click the Plus sign and add the printer listed as Bonjour.

btw John Galt - I this it should be spelled as OS X, please correct me if i'm wrong.. ;-)

Hope that helps,

Shlomi

John, thank you so much for your time...I did see the HP Setup on the network list earllier today, but it is not showing up now. I will keep trying but for now i will stay content connected with the USB cable to the Time Capsule.

I only thing i did different than what you wrote, is after i restored the defaults, I pushed the "Enable Wireless" button, so Time capsule would detect the printer.

Thanks for your time , effort and timely responses.

Hello Shlomil, I haven't heard from you so I'm trying again...having a problem...nothing with HP coming up when I

click on the wifi icon in the corner. Also, like I said before the only thing I did different than what you told me to do was push the "Enable Wireless" button so my Time Capsule would pick up the signal.

I'm really lost.

Hi again,

After clicking the Wi-Fi icon on your Mac, make sure to follow the exact directions by selecting to show other networks as listed above, such an ad-hoc network will not appear within the Wi-Fi menu itself..

how far the printer located from your Mac?

The printer should appear as hpsetup..

Make sure to unplug the USB and keep the printer unplugged from any device as the Time Capsule at this stage..

Try repeating Step One once again, enter the same Wireless Menu and select Enable Wireless..

Follow step two once again, if the Time Capsule can wirelessly detect the printer, I can't see any reason why the Mac won't do the same..

Please let me know if that may help,

Shlomi
