Searched for the file in the places suggested at the Apple help site but no joy. I can't find any readily available info on how to re-download a song I bought and for which I have the receipt from the Apple Store. Ideas?

I was hopeful this would help but I found this fateful sentence in the article: "Items already in your library aren’t available for download." The item is in my library but can't be found. Do I delete it from the library and then try to download again? Because right now I can't nor can I find a delete function for the song listed in my library.
Select the item(s) in the library.
Press delete or right click on them and select delete.
Now they can be downloaded from the iTunes store.

Yes. Simply select the track in the main music list and press the delete key. You may need to close and reopen iTunes before the track appears in the "Not on this computer" list to download.
