iTunes keeps hanging during sync

I've had this issue for a few days now. I have downloaded the latest version (I thought the later version may help soves the problem I have (and it doesn't)) and have also been able to download and install the latest OS for my iPhone 4 and the iPod touch2 (done via my pc - so I know some of it works properly and device talks to PC/itunes)

Occasionally I will get as far as step 5 or 6 (preparing to sync apps or identifying which tracks to sync) before the whole of iTunes hangs/crashes.

However on other occasions, iTunes won't find the device at all and asks me to try later - windows finds the device.... Other times it gets half way through accessing the store on boot-up and then hangs.

If I fire-up iTunes and then plug in the device, it identifies the device and then freezes... I tend to get further along the process with the Touch than the Phone

So I am at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. Any advice gratefully received!

I've now done a clean re-install (so uninstalled iTunes altogether) and reinstalled it and made sure my firewall allows it. I gave up on the old version (also 10.7) when I tried to run diagnostics and it hanged midway through finding the CD!

The new install has exactly the same issue.

First time I fired it up it hanged before opening completely

2nd time it opened etc and got as far as finishing step 5 (prepping Apps) on syncing the Touch

3rd time I opened it with no device attached and as soon as I attached one it hanged before finding it

4th time it found it and then hanged before doing anything.,,

5th time I opened with my phone attached (in case the windows device finder has been interfering with iTunes) - again it identified the device but hanged before doing anything

Really getting hacked off with this - albeit the first time I've had any issues with iTunes or a device!

Browsing another thread I tried a complete restart with my phone plugged in. iTunes hanged on opening, then got going, and then hanged (Not Responding) again when at Step 2 "preparing to sync"
