I installed the 10/16/2012 Java update and now Safari and Chrome will not work

I have a MacBookPro running 10.6.8, today I installed the Java update and now Safari 5.1.7 and Chrome 22.0.1229.94 will not launch. What happened, do we have a BAD update?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You might try resetting the pram and smc.
