No, you don't, not unless it was imported without authorization from Canada or another country. H.H. Gregg, even if the were an authorized iPhone reseller which they do not appear to be, could not be legitimately selling unlocked GSM iPhones; only Apple themselves sell them in the US, and they have not yet announced unlocked iPhone 5s. You may also have a Verizon or Sprint model in which the GSM portion is unlocked, but the iPhone must be activated with Verizon/Sprint before it will work.

Someone had to activate the iPhone or it would not do anything, and a Verizon iPhone could not be activated by T-Mobile. My guess that your reseller activated it (against Verizon policy, most likely) or hacked it in some way.

Again, Apple has not yet announced truly unlocked iPhone 5s in the US.

According to many web sites the Verizon iPhone 5 is SIM unloocked and will work with T-Mobile's network.

But again, and for the last time, Apple has not announced a truly unlocked iPhone 5 in the US. Anyone who buys a Verizon-model iPhone expecting to be able to activate it from scratch through any other carrier risks disappointment and a waste of their money.

Yes, but also according to most of those sites and many other users, the Verizon iPhone has to be activated by Verizon first. I've seen nothing other than kp12's claim to indicate that any other carrier can activate a new, unactivated Verizon-model iPhone.

hhgregg is an authorized Verizon reseller. They are also one of the skeeviest, high pressure sales operations on the planet.

They will tell you anything to get their commission. I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them and I vowed long ago I would never purchase anything from them.

VERIZON IPHONE 5 FROM ANY RETAILER IS GSM UNLOCKED. YOU DONOT NEED ACTIVATION. IT WILL WORK WITH ANY GSM CARRIER. THE PHONE IS NOT HACKED OR TAMPERED WITH IN ANY WAY.

VERIZON WILL NOT RELOCK IT.

Nonsense. No iPhone will work without activation except to call emergency numbers.
