Still looking for a solution to read a Mag Stripe

So far I have tested about a dozen mag stripe readers and I still can't find one that can just read the data off a mag stripe (non credit card) and send that data as a text string to a cursor in iOS.

I had one developer tell me that iOS limits the speed of character input and that a bug causes empty character repeats. The problem we have had with all the readers is that the data from the mag reader to the iOS device is too fast for iOS to process and that is why I don't get a consistent read off the stripe.

Has anyone had any experience with reading data off a mag stripe (non-ecrypted and not credit card data)?

iPad 2, iOS 6

What is a "cursor" in iOS?

Nonsense.

I have never read data from a mag stripe, but I have read data from all kinds of ther funky sources. Of course, I don't think I've ever done that using a device as fast as an iOS device. That's why I'm pretty skeptical. How does this stripe reader connect to the device? What is the path of the data?

Which devices did you test, and how did you test them? There are a number of general purpose magnetic stripe readers on the market, with API's for developers to create their own apps. Any of these should work fine for your simple scenario.

One random example, IDTech has a number of iOS compatible magstripe readers.

http://www.idtechproducts.com/products/mobile-readers/125.html

"Use your mobile device to read a variety of magnetic stripes including credit cards, signature debit cards, gift cards, loyalty cards, driver’s licenses, and ID badges."

Note: Using a magstripe reader as a keyboard wedge into an existing app, without integrating into the app using the device API, is not possible on iOS.
