How so I put a gmail icon on the dock?

I have a gmail address for my medical contact. It won't be used for anything else. How do I get a gmail icon on the dock so I know when a message comes in. I use Mac Mail for all my other messages. I don't want to have to go to gmail.com to check if a message has come.

EMAC, Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I made a mistake. I use Mac 10.6.8. Are the instructions different. I can't get it to go POP
