Calculator won't Quit? Help needed.

When using the Calculator application (the one in Applications / Utilities, not the Dashboard widget), it starts and works OK, but I can't exit the application without using Force Quit.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have a solution?

One possible issue for me might be that I tried the Safari security hole demonstration from 2-3 months ago, the one that showed the hole by launching Calculator. Perhaps that's part of the problem?

Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your calculator works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.

Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.

Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.5 Stand Alone Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.

Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /applications/utilities/disk utility.

OK. Finally got a time when I didn't need the machine for an hour or so. Booted from Tiger DVD. Repaired disk permissions (only one or two fixed). Repaired disk (nothing found). Rebooted. Installed 10.4.5 Combo update. Rebooted. Repaired Disk permissions (lots, mostly DVD player and widgets). Started Calculator. Still doesn't like to quit without Forcing.

Stranger and stranger.

Same effect in all accounts. (Cmd-Q and Calculator->Quit Calculator give identical responses.) And I have other troubles with Calculator besides not quitting - sometimes won't calculate at all.

Here's a telling little console message that spits out everytime I try to quit:

2006-07-30 19:58:07.960 Calculator[1070] * -[GraphController settingsToStore]: selector not recognized [self = 0x37a0d0]

Now, if I close the Calculator window (Cmd-W or File->Close Calculator Window) I get the following console message:

2006-07-30 20:11:08.221 Calculator[1325] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: * -[GraphController settingsToStore]: selector not recognized [self = 0x3aa720]

and the only way I can find to make the Calculator window reappear is to File->Show Paper Tape - the Calculator window reappears along with the Paper Tape window.

After closing and opening the Calculator window this way, however, it will refuse to output any new calculation results.

For instance, after entering the sequence "6", "*", "3," "=" the result window shows simply "3". No new values nor operators appear in the paper tape window and no new exception messages appear in the Console.

My Calculator has been displaying some weirdness lately too. In fact it often does and has since.....gad, at least Jaguar! Way back then I downloaded what was then a freeware program called Pcalc. It still runs in Tiger, but I notice he is now up to version 3 and it is now a shareware program rather than free. Take a look at VersionTracker:

Do a search on "calculator" and you'll find quite number of free goodies. One of them might suit you better.
