I recently received the 2GB iPod nano as a gift. I was able to set it up on my iBook and transfer songs. Then I brought it to work with me and tried to connect it to my PC. After installing the iPod + iTunes software I got a message that my iPod would need to be reformatted in order to work. I didn't want to reformat it and risk not being able to use it at home. Can the iPod go back and forth from Mac to Windows or do you need to pick one and stick with it? Thanks.

A Mac can read a PC formatted iPod, but the reverse does not work. A PC can't read a Mac formatted iPod.
I recently purchased a new PC after my Mac bit the dust. I want to transfer the songs from my Nano to my new PC.
When I plug my Nano into my PC the "Do notDisconnect" display appears on the Nano screen, but the PC does not seem to be recognizing the Nano.
A box on my PC appears saying that my ipod is not readable and the ipod must be reformatted for use on the PC. It says I must run Ipod Updater application to reformat or restore my ipod.
I am worried that I will lose all my music if I reformat. Is there any way to get my new PC to recognize my Nano and to transfer songs to my PC?

If your Nano is formatted for Mac then you won't be able to use it on the PC until it is reformatted, unfortunately this will erase the hard drive. You can check for sure what the format is by switching it on and going to Settings>About. If you see a serial number it is Mac formatted otherwise it will read Windows: iPod: How to determine your iPod's disk format
Thanks for the reply. I checked and my Nono is formatted for Mac.
I really do not want to lose all my music. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can somehow get the music on my Nano to my PC when my Nano is formated for a Mac?
Is there software that can help?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection. However your problem is that to retrieve your music prior to formatting, you will need to connect to a Mac to use it. If it was possible for you to borrow one you could take the tracks off and save them, restore your iPod on Windows then reload it and either do the transfer over again on to your PC or network and transfer iTunes between the two computers. Hope some of this helps .

You may already be using the iPod in manual update mode. However if you can get access to another Mac, when you connect if you are getting a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list. Change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.
