How do I tell if my pictures have actually been stored in the cloud?

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi + Cellular (VZ), iOS 6

The only photos stored on icloud are...


1) photos in the camera roll that are included in a backup to icloud. But you can turn off backups of such photos.


Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage, tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned OFF if you don't want to store photos in a backup.


2) Photos stored in photo stream (or shared photo stream).


You can't tell what pictures are in a backup. To some extent the same is true of photo stream.


Photos should not be stored on icloud as a means of storing them. They should always be copied to a computer for safekeeping.
