This is a bit ridiculous given that Oracle makes it almost impossible to just download and install the Java applet plug-in.

Please try http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp where you can find Version 7 Update 9 available for OS X users.
On the one hand, will have the PITA of having to do this manually from now on. But at least will have the assurance that Java will be more up to date than when Apple managed (and relegated to oblivion) the process.

Here's what I did - I installed Java 7 upgrade 9 and am forced to use FireFox to connect to the site that uses the Java applet plugin - pretty sad hack.

The recomendation to download the plugin from Oracle is disingenuous at best. Oracle doesn't support Java 6 on Mac and only provides a Java 7 download.
Answer: There is no Java 6 plugin for Mac on Oracle's site.
