Software Update: Stopping halfway through the process

I have osx lion and have had my macbook pro 13 for about two years. For some reason in the past couple of days my mac wont update. I go to the apple sign > software update and let the process run. But now for some reason the progress bars stops halfway through the process and doesnt move. I let it sit there over night and still nothing. Tried several different techniques including one posted by someone else who had a exact screen shot of what I am talking about but he never got a full answer as how to fix it. Plain and simple >>> how do I fix this problem so I can update? Yes I know I can just go to apple.com and update from there but I have no clue as what I am supposed to be updating.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Two thoughts .... When Software Update is not loaded or running, go to your user name/library/preferences and rename com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist to something else, like com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.save . Now start Software Update to see if it now works. If it does, you can delete the file you renamed. Sometimes the plist files can get corrupted, causing odd issues, and a new plist file is created when the program runs.

If that doesn't do it, go to the Apple download site, and get either the 10.7.4 combo update or the 10.7.5 combo update. Before running it, use Disk Utility, on your hard drive in applications/utilities, and repair permissions. Apply the update, then repair permissions again. Sometimes, funky things happen with the operating system, which installing the latest combo update can fix.
