Why won't my Mac Pro startup?

All the information I have:

I've been out of town for a week, so I unplugged my Mac Pro for the time I was gone.

I got back this morning and plugged it in. It started normally.

Updates were available. I installed them which required a restart. I restarted.

Now the Mac Pro will not come back on. It seems to alternate between just not responding (alhtough it seems the insides are starting up nothing comes on the screen) or sometimes it chimes and comes up with grey boot screen then goes to black.

Please help! I have tried to reset SMC controller by turning off, unplugging the power for 15+ seconds, plugging back in the power, waiting 5+ seconds and hitting the power button and then it chimes, brings up grey boot screen, then the screen goes black.

A Never be w/o a bootable backup clone of your system

B Clone your system with CCC before updates

C Pull all your drives and devices and cables and try

D Invest in a 900W / 1500VA UPS

E NO IDEA what OS you are on: 10.6 .7 or .8

F Install a new fresh OS and initialize a drive for emergency / clone that to a new base OS system

G SMC Reset: Hit the power button for 10 seconds. By your method your Mac WAS reset while unplugged for week

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on

https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367

Symptoms

If your Macintosh computer won't turn on, here's how to troubleshoot it. Please keep in mind that although your computer may display similar symptoms that prevent it from showing video, this article discusses what to do if the computer won't turn on, meaning that when you press the power button:

  • You don't hear a startup chime.
  • You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
  • The power button or power indicator doesn't light up at all.
If your computer doesn't display any video, it may display one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
  • You may hear a startup chime.
  • You may hear fan or drive noise.
  • You may see the power button or power indicator light up.
If any of these conditions occurs, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead.

Resolution

If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:

  1. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)
  2. Make sure that the power adapter is properly connected to the power port on the side or back of the computer.
  3. Disconnect all accessories that are plugged into the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
  4. Reset the computer's PMU, SMC, or PRAM. Refer to the instructions for your model:

reset SMC For "Mac wont' turn on or boot" and related

The computer was running poorly after I got it working, so after a full day work I decided to do a quick restart. I verified the disks and permissions and everything came back perfectly, but after restarting, it is doing the same thing....

I am running the newest updated OSX Mountain Lion. I did notice the power button on the from of the Mac Pro is flashing whilt the monitors are black.

the power button on the front of the Mac Pro is flashing

That is a clear indication of a RAM memory problem. The MacPro 65lb tower uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) memory and has the Hardware on the XEON chip to do memory correction on the fly.

Finding memory problems with ECC memory is very different from non-ECC memory problem isolation.

Use the running system with its error detection to your advantage. Check frequently in:

About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Memory ...

... for any modules at less than their expected size, or status other than "OK". These have failed.

Also check:

About this Mac > ( More Info ) > Diagnostics ...

... to see if there are recent reports of failures.

All of these tests came back OK and PASSED. The computer is still on as I'm somewhat annoyed with turning it off and having to figure out how to get it back on but seems to be running slowly. Programs are opening slow, even websites are loading slower than normal. I'm a little confused as to what is going on but any other quick tests or maybe resets would be helpful. Again I already verified disk and permissions and nothing came back wrong. This is a fairly new (within a few months) install of OSX Lion upgraded to Mountain Lion.

I'm not one of those people who likes to reformat and use a backup to re-install because if its a software issue, I know it would just put the problem back on the computer... So I might be re-installing everything soon, although its super annoying because its so loaded down with software.
