Unresponsive Nano

Please help, unplugged my nano from the charger this morning, screen was showing a charged icon and a locked icon. No amount of toggling the switch back and forth would unlock the device. Went to the help page, did the "hold the menu and select button manuver." I now have a blank screen and a totally unresponsive nano. I've updated my itunes and tried different cables but the computer does not recognize the nano and I've tried to repeat the menu/select button thing numerous times to no avail.
Do I go straight to service or is there a fix for this?
