Newbie here...struggling to set up Brother Printer MFC-J435W. Is it compatible with OS X Mountain Lion? I can print but can't scan and haven't even attempted to fax. Do I need to download anything? It came with CD Rom but it's not downloading the installer??...Grrrr...Help! lol

Good news ... your printer is in Apple's "Printer and Scanner Software" list in the attached Mac Print 101 document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670
So yes, you can print and scan.
You may want to go to System Preferences > Print & Scan and remove your printer (using the minus sign on the bottom) and then re-add it (with the plus sign). There is probably a separate scan tab once the printer re-installs. Apple will provide the driver for you and keep it current as well.
The article says "Lion", but it's the most current, so Mountain Lion should support it as well.
having an older brother mfc-490cw i went over to the brother site and downloaded drivers for mountain lion
but after reading the aforementioned article all is working no need.
I went to Brother and downloaded Presto! Manager for this mac. I can print and copy but still can't scan. I will look again. ty
help me here since we are brothers - when u speak of scan....
are you using manager (will assume yes) are u doing, image, ocr, email or file
then again are u pushing the scan from the printer
also what is the error message code if using the manager
