Newbie here and struggling to set up Brother Printer MFC-J435W. I can print but can't scan as of yet. Is this thing compatible with OS X Mountain Lion?

Good news ... your printer is in Apple's "Printer and Scanner Software" list in the attached Mac Print 101 document: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4670

So yes, you can print and scan.

You may want to go to System Preferences > Print & Scan and remove your printer (using the minus sign on the bottom) and then re-add it (with the plus sign). There is probably a separate scan tab once the printer re-installs. Apple will provide the driver for you and keep it current as well.

The article says "Lion", but it's the most current, so Mountain Lion should support it as well.
