I am able to use my external iSight camera with Yahoo messenger, so it should work with the built in camera of the MBP.

Open Yahoo messenger and select Yahoo Messenger->Preferences from the menu bar. Click on the Webcam-Video in the sidebar of the preference pane. Click on the drop down menu for Default Source and see if you iSight camera is listed as an option.

Apple really needs to resolve the NAT (network address translation) issue with iChat or people will not be using it very often for Video Conferencing. I've noticed iChat video to be least successful if both users are behind home routers.

There is no reason why Apple can't correct NAT resolution issues -- we've been doing it for years with other real time applications, such as Voice over IP and the competition has managed to get it working with their applications.

For me this issue, coupled with no support for other chat networks is the number one issue why I don't use iChat very often.

There's another NAT issue, and that's the inability to use the default NFS connection dialog in the Finder when the NFS server is on the other side of a NAT firewall. Attempting NFS connection using that dialog only permit the use of UDP and that's not able to traverse a NAT firewall. There is a way to use TCP, but it was tedious to use and hard to find out. I've already forgotten and will have to research it again the next time I want to use it…

Perhaps you should consider doing split tunneling via VPN. It will give you a tad of overhead, and will require an additional step before your mount the drive but you should be able to get NFS working. Checkout openvpn, there are frontends for the application on a variety of host OS's.

In general, I'm not happy with the built-in behavior of the network and network file transfer components of OSX. I've seen very strange behavior in the FTP client, and I've also noticed that hickups on the network cause the finder to spin its "wheels" and waste time.

Yes, that's probably a good choice for me, 'cause I currently have only my Linux box accessible on the Internet. I'm reasonably certain about its security, becaues I'm much more familiar with securing those systems. But more and more I'm finding myself wanting to get at my iMac when I'm away from home. A VPN would probably be a good thing to set up, all around.

Thanks.

yeah my yahoo messenger just stopped using isight just awhile ago. i tried starting the webcam again and again through YM but all it would give me is a 1 sec peek in the cam then it would say "Stopped". what the heck is wrong with it??? i tried deleting yahoo messenger and installing it again but it still doesn't work. iphoto and ichat work just fine with the iSight.

this mbp is getting really annoying, makes me wish i hadn't bought it and stuck with my pb.

I'm using a AlBook and my iSight has stopped working with Yahoo Messenger as of a few days ago.

In my case, my default source is set for "IIDC FireWire Video" (the only source enabled) and when I click "Start My Webcam", my iSight clicks like it is starting up but then the cam window says "Stopped" and the green light turns off.

I suspect some security patch recently downloaded may have messed up something. Deleting plist files doesn't fix this, also!
