My wife and I share the same apple id and we both have iPhones (4). She finally updated her software and got iCloud loaded on her phone. The issue we are experiencing is that we are both getting texts as if we had one account. Is there any way yo reslove this without having her get a new apple id.

Assuming you are running iOS 6, try going to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and unchecking the email address shown under "You can be reached by iMessage at" on both phones.
On each iPhone, go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive.
Below you can be reached by iMessage at, remove the Apple ID shared email address on each iPhone.
Settings, messages, send and recieve, start new conversations from, Check your own individual email that is different from your spouses. Also, it is easiest to have your own apple id.
