blank screen with apple icon and thinking wheel when computer is turned on

I have a macbook pro 2007 modle which won't turn on completely. I charged it and tried powering the battery on and then off again and it still only shows a grey screen with the apple icon and thinking wheel then shuts off after 5 minutes or less?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier
