My Safari browser has quit and ...

A few months ago, my Safari browser up and quit. I've tried to download a new copy (as per instructions in several forums) but no luck there (same problem). I've since tried Firefox, Opera and Camino but none of them make me happy like Safari did.

I have a 2008 Intel MacBook; OS 1.6.8 (Snow Leopard). No idea what happened or why. Other than that my computer works fine. I tried to delete Safari and download a new copy but that didn't work either. Since then I've tried to use Firefox, Opera and Camino. None of them come close to Safari, imo.

I would love to have Safari back. Any advice would be appreciated.

Okay, I tried downloading again and this time it works fine in a new Mac identity (but still not in the one I am currently using).

In the affected account, go to Safari > Preferences > Security and deselect the box next to: Enable plug ins

Quit and relaunch Safari. If it doesn't quit, follow the instructions for troubleshooting third party add ons here.

That seems to have worked, Carolyn. When I first tried to open Safari all I got was the whirling ball and eventually had to crash and reboot. Next time, Safari opened to a page saying I had just installed Amazon Wish List (so trying to do that may have caused the intitall problem, months ago). Then I followed your instructions and Safari seems to be working well.

WOW, i have safari 6.0.1 with Mountain Lion and I unchecked the box next to the plug-in and it worked perfectly. Now I can watch youtube videos!!! Wonder why though?

You may have a third party plugin installed that was preventing video content from streaming.

Possibly ClickToFlash ... When you deselect: Enable plugins

That disables all plugins which is used mainly for troubleshooting.

Now I have two new (related, I think) problems. One is that pdf files won't download. All I get is a blank white screen or a black screen with one of those bars you get for an audio file. Clicking on the bar doesn't do anything. I found a thread here:

which suggests going to Safari>Help>Installed Plug Ins but all that shows is a blank page. No plugins. Would this not be because Plug Ins are disabled, as above?

Also, I can watch youtube.com videos but attempting to access other videos online gets me a message saying that I have to download the latest Adobe Flash player. I have done so several times but nothing changes.

I'd like to check Enable Plugins but I'm scared to mess with this. I don't want my Safari to stop working again.
