Q: Why is my apple tv sending audio to my AirPlay speakers?

I have an apple tv 2 and AirPort express. I have 5.1 on my atv and 7.6.1 on my express (which is plugged to my stereo to get sound). I went to AirPlay options and selected my airport express under the speaker option and tried YouTube and movie previews from the home screen and the audio still is coming through my tv and not my stereo with the airport express. What is going on?

You can't split the audio from the video. If you want audio going to external speakers they need to be connected to ATV

IOS 5.1(5201) should allow "AirPlay - Send audio content from Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs). Also includes the ability to require an onscreen code to use AirPlay with your Apple TV."

But I did not try.

OkAy never mind I found the problem. I read numerous articles about atv splitting pictures and sound to watch movies and send audio to AirPlay speakers but this was done by using a iOS 6 preview. Thanks

That capability is for audio only, not splitting audio from a video stream.
