Hi, on my IPad 2, you just click edit then highlight the photos you want to delete and click delete 🙂
The links below have instructions for deleting photos.

This is so freakin' ********. Why isn't there a "delete all" command? What is this, frixkin' 1992?!
I totally agree! I've got 4,500 pictures of India I want to delete and there seems no way to do it other than tapping each one before hitting delete. That link above to Jeff Geerling's blog post from 2010 doesn't seem to be germane since the only way I get a Share button on my current iPad, which I bought in October 2012, is to maximize a single picture. I expect more from Apple than this.
So, I have to touch 4,500 pictures so I can delete them all at once? That's Neanderthalian.
Just connect to iTunes and synch photos with an empty folder. Voilá. But it should have a delete all option, as well as not "deleting" original filenames when importing, etc. Oh well...

You're right it should.
Is there a listing for Photos on the left hand side under the Library options (I'm on a PC, so hopefully iTunes isn't too different)? If you really want to delete the Photos from iTunes, and not just unsync them from the iPad, you would probably delete them from there. I don't have Photos in the Library, but I have none loaded into iTunes. The Library is where I have to go to delete Apps, Music, etc.
Step 1: Connect your iPad 3 to your computer using the data cable.
Step 2: Open the photo application on your computer and delete the synced photos you want to remove from your iPad 3. You do not have to physically remove the photos from your computer, but you must remove them from the synced photo albums.
Step 3: Open the iTunes application on your computer by double-clicking the iTunes icon.
Step 4: Select the iPad from the left navigation panel. Click the "Photos" tab in iTunes and select the folder that contains your photos from the drop-down menu next to "Sync Photos From" at the top of the page.
Step 5: Select the "Selected albums, Events and Faces, and automatically include" option and place a check mark next to the photo albums you want to sync with your iPad 3. Select the album from which you removed the individual photos.
Step 6: Click the "Apply" button to delete the synced photos from your iPad 3.

thank you problem solved
Ok, so the real question is: how do you do this without a computer. Apple has updated the iPad so you never have to plug it into a computer, yet to do relatively simply stuff like this, you have to have a computer. It seems like if you go through settings, general, usage you can delete photos that way, but it just freezes up for me. Anyone else have luck with this?
Ditto. My ipad is full because I can't delete any photos in iPhoto and am too annoyed to select each photo manually in photos area and delete all does not work for me either.
Import all photos using iPhoto, then select delete photos when the pop up appears after it's finished. Or manually, selecting one by one... Takes ages
I tried this but it apparently had no effect on the ipad photos. I synched an empty macbook directory with the ipad but noting happened.
