mail closing issue

Mail takes a very long time to close. Does anyone know what is the reason why and how to ricover the issue?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

What I would recommend is this:

Shut down Mail.
Open Finder
Click Go (menu)
Click Go to folder....
Copy and paste ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and hit Enter
Once you have located the com.apple.mail.plist file move it to the Desktop and logout of your account
Log back into your account and test Mail

Cannot locate com.apple.mail.plist file but the file com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile.

I went through the suggested process with that file but things seem not change.

Have I done something wrong?

Re-do the process, there is a ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file, you need to be careful looking.

Sorry the file is really not there (see attachment). Shall I maybe re-install Mail and how can I do that?
