The details that can be provided in answers are limited by the details provided. And since almost no details were provided there are not really any specifics that can be given.
Are you sure you are entering the WiFi user name and password into the WiFi interface. ATV has a lot of different types of user ID's (WiFi, Home sharing, iCloud, Photo stream, etc.) for it's differnt services.
What happens when you try to enter your user ID and password? Are you seeing your WiFi network on the list? Are you sure you are connecting to YOUR wifi network and not someone else's?

I'm not using any security and I am using WPA2. I have turned off and on. turned router off and on. restartred appletv...
name and password entered into interface, i've had the unit for a year now and had nothing but trouble connecting. i am using the correct network and trying to connect to my wifi.

When I said security I meant wifi encryption - you are using WPA2 which should be fine.
I think I would personally try to restore the AppleTV using a micro USB cable to connect it to iTunes, as per instructions here:
