I got an iPhone as a gift and can't activate it. It was once registered with Rogers (Canada), but the contract was canceled at some point. They say they can't do anything since there is no active contract.  How can I release my phone?

if it's sim locked with the former carrier only the former carrier can unlock it

Only Rogers can unlock it, & they do offer official unlocking. So, you'll have to deal with them to get the phone officially unlocked.

Apple can't/won't help you. If Rogers won't unlock it, there is no way to get it officially unlocked. Any other method involves hacking.
