Why Multiple Kernel "issues" w/G4 iMac/Tiger?

Folks:

Lately have had a run of KPs in my ten year old +- G4 iMac . . . so we know it's "old" but overall when it's running well, it's fine. I ran the Apple Hardware test and that shows "OK" . . . I have SmartReporter and that shows fine. I booted up in ext HD and ran DU to Repair Disk, and I ran Onyx as well . . . . Today, I was trying to see if it was related to the browser, lately Ten4Fox, so I switched back to Camino but got the same "we don't support your browser" and KP there as well . . . . Then I tried to not use the internet at all and things were going well for awhile, but then got another KP that way. The computer has stopped generating "Crash Reports" to send to Apple and now just gives the kernel panic in a CLI note in black bars with white text that drops down over the desktop; multiple times the "grey" screen with the "You need to restart" happened, we aren't wasting time doing that now . . . the mouse and screen freezes and the CLI kernel trap info shows up. BTW, I also had done a PRAM reset, and then I saw BDAqua's post here about doing it three times, which I did the other day and it seemed like the problem was fixed . . . until today with 3 of them. Seems like it can happen right on revive from sleep or after running the computer for awhile. Any thoughts? I've been told already, "It's time for a new computer" and I'm reconciled to that in the near-long term as the "answer" . . . just wondering if I can get some insight into troubleshooting my dear old G4 friend and keep it going for awhile longer??? Can anybody hep me? Final note, I've got the int HD partitioned and running Xu/Lu 12.0.4, the crash problem started there and that's not new, but then continued over into the OSX side. Today, I was logged into Xu/Lu and did not have any KP while there . . . but did again back in OSX . . . . Is it "soft" or "hard" ware issue? I can't tell . . . . Many thanks for any insights.

It likely means some munged file or driver, do you have the OS9 Install Disc?

BDAqua:

I do have the OS9 install disc . . . of course I don't really want to go to 9, I'd like to get back to 10 . . . the problem seems to be I can't either boot back into 10, or haven't been able to get the DVD tray to open . . . so if I'd like to re-install an OS I somehow need to get passed this Startup Disk selected option for 9.2 that boots to the flashing question mark . . . . One thing I forgot to try was to try booting with the Option key, I'm away from the iMac for the entire day and evening, so it wouldn't be until tomorrow that I could try that to see if I can get the different choices of OS's to boot from . . . but w/o that working it's re-booting into the SD pick for 9.2.2 . . . which it can't boot. But I was just tryiing 9 to see if the KP's would stop or be less frequent . . . not wanting to make it a permanent decision . . . .

BDA:

The saga continues for our amusement . . . tried to boot with the option key last night and was able to pick the Linux partition, and then I restarted holding the mouse down and the DVD tray opened. So this morning I plugged the Ext HD back in giving me some clone options and booted with the Option key held down and was able to boot into the Internal HD partition running OSX, the fabled Macinto . . . got to Statup Disk, saw that it was selected for 9 and changed it back to 10, rebooted and got the verbose log in, but booted into a non-Safe Boot session. Played around for a few minutes in a browser . . . and after a little while the mouse just froze . . . indicating . . . perhaps that Macinto had again become ridden with anxiety . . . . So, one step forward, one small step . . . . We're back into OSX, somehow Macinto figured out how to un-Safe Boot, the Yaboot window only shows up when booting Linux from the Option key instead of on re-boot . . . but most critical, the duration of non-KP use times is again . . . short. Possibly the FW plug to the Ext HD still being plugged in?? Possibly the non-Safe Boot . . . . But, thanks for the reminders on the Option key, the holding down the mouse on start-up . . . I'll try to read thru the TMM data on all the things you need to know about KP . . . over the weekend . . . .

PS: I'd like to offer my "Macinto" (the famous Seminole resistance fighter) HD moniker as a concept for the name of the OSX11 series . . . even though Apple is China based, use the names of American Indian chiefs, medicine men, etc . . . they have to be running out of cat names, right? "Macinto" could be the first . . . . : - )

Might I suggest they not insult Tribes, & use evil spirit names/places instead for iOS11. 😉

We're sorry, you cannot boot into Hades until you submit a DNA sample to your FaceBook account... Error -666

Hilarious . . . well this kind of "brain storming" is how great ideas are turned into great fortunes . . . for someone . . . I'm sticking with my 'Merican Indian chiefs idea . . . I think with a little "persuasion" from Apple I thnk the Tribes would/could be brought to understand the huge benefit that could come out of it . . . I mean who wouldn't want the "Geronimo" OS????? Come on guys, steal this idea from me . . . .

BDAq && TMM, et al:

Spent some time yesterday looking at the XLabs Kernel panic page . . . some of which I have already done, right now I'm testing the RAM with Rember for 10.4 . . . . But, in looking at the verbose log in I saw "extension com.apple.driver.KeylargoATA has no dependency" . . . which I found in the Console system.log as well. And then in looking a little more there was the same idea vis com.apple.HID apple keyboard??? and then a note about "downloading f/w for airport" . . . ????? firmware for airport?? but nothing has been changed on the iMac in terms of hardware for many years . . . ??? Although today I switched the mouse to a Logitech mouse I have since the other one I'm using on the iBook to type this post out rather than get stuck with the imac crashing in the middle of it . . . . I emailed a section of the system log to myself if looking at it would be enlightening. I also emailed the Panic.log report that was generated from the last crash that I was re-boting from today . . . but it looks similar to the other one, only the numbers may have changed. But today was the first time I recall seeing anything about a "kernel extension having no dependencies" mentioned . . . and wondering if that is even diagnostic?? Perhaps not????

Sorry - not read whole thread but:

Can you backup the whole disk, erase and reinstall?

Mr Hillyer:

Thanks for the thought, in point of fact after I posted yesterday afternoon I tried to boot into the Tiger install disc holding the C key down, but either the "verbose" aspect or some glitch prevented the boot into the disk. I have a CCC clone of the system more or less up to date, but I was resisting an OSX reinstall because I've got the HD partitioned . . . seems like the Safe Boot mode let the system run longer before crashing, but yesterday there was a series of crashes . . . it was warm/hot here yesterday perhaps that shortens the time between panic stops . . . . Anyway, I was going to try an "Archive and Install" as per the XLabs panic wiki, before going for the total erase . . . it's just about throwing time into a machine . . . . Can't complain too much since the iMac has run more or less trouble free for at least 10 years; but lately a lot of time spent trying to get a Linux partition to run the "unsupported" PPC processor . . . . Anyway, in a day or so I'll try to get the install disc booted, perhaps by Option key . . . .

Best to try a clean install after erasing one partition. No need to erase the whole disk. I would resist the temptation to import any settings or data during the install (except network settings) as this may bring back the bug. When the OS is updated and working you can manually copy data from the CCC backup.

Good luck.

Since you like multiple volumes you could consider using ccc to clone the install disk to a small volume for fast disk repairs or installs in future.

NH:

Thanks for the follow-up, right, I'd prefer not to erase the Linux partition, problem being that I saw where OSX messes with other systems when it gets re-installed, could be a simple fix like re-installing Yaboot or maybe more complicated; I tried to boot the SuperGrub2 disk to see if it could detect anything in PPC but couldn't boot that disk either. However, the devil is in the details perhaps mentioned earlier in the thread?? which is that the KPs were also happening in the Linux system as well, leading me to believe that this is a hardware issue rather than a software . . . although Rember seemed to find no problems in one loop of checking RAM, but when I tried to have it run more loops the system "froze" on the screen . . . Apple Hardware test also finds nothing on several runs. So, right, it doesn't take too long to destruct an install, and it doesn't take too long to do an install . . . I even have the 10.4.11 Combo update stored . . . and I'm more comfortable working with the OSX side than the Linux in terms of diagnostics . . . it's just that my "feeling" is that the software won't solve the issue, unless Linux and OSX have both developed the same "bug" . . . the "iMac PPC panic bug" ????? : - )))

Have you done anything to increase the temperature inside the Mac.

The only positive thing I can say is that installs on one volume will not affect the others.

I think you can normally partition a volume without affecting the others but take care with this as it may depend upon the tool being used.

If I remember correctly Leopard (but not Tiger) can (within limits) resize volumes without loss of data if there is sufficient contiguous free space at one end. Unfortunately it does not provide a tool (like the old Norton) which moves the data up to one end. OS X only appears to do this after large installs. I have fond memories of the original SilverLining which allocated more directory space so that volumes could easily be resized later.

@NH: Vis the temperature comment, I was referring to BDAqua's thought that perhaps the thermal paste has deteriorated and so the iMac might be more sensitive to heat. At the one point I did Safe Boot we also had some rare rain and it was cooler and the computer ran well for over an hour, now we are back to Late Fall Santa Ana conditions, dry wind . . . warmer, etc, and yesterday a rash of KPs again. And, right, it should be that one volume won't affect the other in terms of software, but the hardware is shared . . . . It's hard to be totally organized in terms of troubleshooting because it seems that once the panics set in, the system can't be run long enough to do anything . . . . Right, in Tiger you have to erase the whole disk to re-size volumes . . . never went to Leopard because neither of my PPC units qualify . . . hardware wise.

Not that I recommend it, but...

Leopard requirements/10.5.x...

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

minimum system requirements

* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)

* DVD drive for installation

* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.

Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

There are workarounds if the 867MHz CPU is the only hangup...
