messenger not linked to contact list

When I search for a name in Messenger, it will not find a name even if it is in my contact list. Is there a way to link my contact list to messenger's search so names in my contact list are found in Messenger?

When I search there all my contacts are there. So the search box in "Messages" only searches in the list of people I have previously sent/received messages from. The way to search for a contact to use to send a message to requires I use the square with the pencil in it in messages to open the "new message" screen, and then using the plus sign in blue circle start a search of my contacts.

Wait a minute here. Are you trying to send a new message, or are you trying to find a message that you already sent and view it again. The instructions we have been giving you are to create a new message and add a contact as the person to send it to. If you are trying to search your Messages app for a previously sent message, you need to go to the phone search screen and type in the name. If it isn't coming up there, then go to Settings, General, Spotlight Search and make sure there is a checkmark by Messages.
