my imessage stopped working with my iphone 4. it was working but then i had to restore it because it got deleted by mistake. i've since restored it twice and it's still not working

That is why it won't work, it isn't activated yet. Try turning it off, and Facetime off as well. They do a reset on the phone by holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo. After the phone restarts, go to Settings, Messages, turn iMessage back on again and see if it activates. Then you can go into Seetings, Factime and activate it.

It has something to do with contacting the activation server. Try information from this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755 for Messages, and this one http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3367 for FaceTime.
that didn't help either. i've never had any problems at all - but when my iphone got erased last night even though i've restored it twice, imessage still isn't working

When you restored, did you restore as new, or from a backup?
i think I restored from a backup because i wanted my apps, contacts etc... to stay the same
Apps and contacts can by synced back to the device through iTunes. The backup handles different content. This support document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 tells you what is in the backup. If that doesn't matter to you, you can restore as a new device and see if that helps. There could be something in the backup that is creating the problem.
