Does anyone use their iPad as a phone?

I am interested in knowing if anyone uses their iPad as their phone? I have such a hard time reading and using the smartphones due to the size of the screen and for the amount of money I pay, would like to also use the iPad with a wireless keyboard for work when I am away from the house. What problems should I anticipate using the iPad? I have the oldest version and would update to the newest with internet capability which when I originally priced was I think billable by the month (no contract) and either $15/$30 for internet.

Facetime and Skype can be used for video communications, but not really a phone. I've used both and work ok if you're not moving around. With Facetime the other users must also have facetime and be registerd with an account, but its free. With skype, you can call phone numbers and the cost will depend on what options you choose. (its free between other skype users though).

My kids use all kinds of apps on the iPad for texting/phone calls so I know there are free ways to do this though I do need a stable phone number for work (which I kind of have through Google Voice). I guest I am wondering aobut how well the bluetooth devices work with iPad (if at all) and are there any issues I have not that considered other than the incovenience of size for carrying.

Thank you,

Gari

I have never personally used my ipad for this purpose, I have however on my macbook pro, with success. As far as using a bluetooth device for sound/mic, that might come down to trial and error. I would reccomend trying earbuds with an inline mic first, found in the apple on line store (and elswhere). I have used my mac book to talk to my sister on her ipad, but she just used the ipad built in speakers and mic, and quality was ok.

Is one of the things I am looking for and ask why? Samsung now has the 7 inches, 8.0 and 10.1 tab and note with 3g and phone capabilities, why apple are so close minded and do not use the Ipad as a phone... someone said ïs not a phone.... That is true, several years ago someone maybe make a question, why I can not use my ipod as a phone, and the same guy answer... is not a phone... I know I will burn in **** for saying this, but I am still using my ipad first gen, because I use phoneit Ipad, I did not went to a newer ipad, because of this, I have an Iphone 5 and my Ipad 1... if I have the chance to move to ipad mini and use it as a phone... I will, but why does not apple release the software, or if they want, just sell it as an app... the ipads, has the structure, equipment, hardware to work as a phone... JUST release it, check Phoneit Ipad, and iphoneIslam,
