Configuring Voyager 205 with Airport Express - Can't audio/video chat.

Hello,

I've read through some topics regarding assigning a static IP address and port forwarding to allow audio/video chat through the mentioned router.

This is my understanding: I have to assign a static IP address for my Airport Express to connect to the router, than assign another static IP address for my laptop to my Airport Express. I also have a PC running Windows 2K, which only needs to access the internet, but I'm assuming this will need a static IP address also?

Do I need to follow the directions on 'portforwarding.com' and include an extra step to accomodate my Airport Express?

Any help would be most appreciated.

How have you setup the 205 as there is not enough space in it open all the ports, some have had better success doing this http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1023161

Hi Will,

Nope not quite. The number of port can be a problem

Leave the 205 in DHCP.
Turn off the DHCP (And NAT) in the Airport (Distributing Addresses in the Network tab).
Port Forward the 205 for ports for iChat
Port Forward the ports to the PC for AIM if required

This is the simplest. The Airport becomes a Wireless Access point.

You may have to check the IPs stay the same now and then.

You can set up a Static set of Addresses from Modem to computer now and keep the Port Forwarding for iChat.

The Web browsing and email ports below the 1024 mark will be open to both computers so there will be no need to Port Forward the PC.

When you say port forward for iChat, does that mean I have to adjust the IP filtering on the modem aswell to let them through the firewall?

Hi Will,

It should be just the bits mentioned here.

It should not need to set anywhere else. Filtering is normally outgoing stuff where you don't want a computer or an app getting on line.

I don't want to leave the PC unprotected as it doesn't have a firewall, so DMZ wouldn't be be appropriate. But i've come across a website that uses telnet to create a NAT rule that covers ranges of ports, yet only uses one rule slot - http://corz.org/comms/hardware/router/bt.voyager.205_router.recipes.php (under generic rules at the bottom)

Many thanks for the advice though, it's unusual to come accross someone that has actually been helped by a 'Help' desk.

As I was anxious to get started, I've set static IP address for my Airport Express, laptop and PC. I've created NAT rules as well to deal with the port forwarding.

If I change the modem back to DHCP, but leave my static IP address as they are, will the NAT rules I've created forwarding to my laptop IP address still function properly?

Hi Will,

If ther Static IPs are for the Airport and computers on the 205 as a server then once you have set up the ports you should not need to change anything.

If you mean that the Airport is static to the modem and the computers to the Airport then you will have to change.
