Q: Transferring data from 1TB Time Capsule to new 2TB 10 Days?

Following this process it says it will task 10 days to transfer 835GB of data in my sparsebundle to the new Time Capsule. Both connected via Ethernet Cables. Is there a quicker way?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), 16GB RAM

Are you using usb to ethernet cable on the MBPr??

Even the Thunderbolt to Ethernet cable is known to be slow.

It will take a while even by ethernet.. but as long as you are getting gigabit speed on both then about 60GB an hour should be possible.. something is not connecting at gigabit.

You could archive off the old TC to a USB drive.. and copy from there.. but that won't be faster and then takes two steps.

Yes I am using USB to Ethernet. How can I find out if I am getting Gigabit connectivity? Tanks for your help.

Open the activity monitor and see how fast you are moving packets.. but USB is slow..

And copying sparsebundle could be very slow due to the structure of the files.. they are very small.. 8KB I think.. zillions of them.

Try just copying a single large file to the new TC in a different directory and see how long that takes.

I have my MacBook connected to the time capsules with USB and Thunderbolt but whatever I do they only connect wirelessly. If I turn off wireless they give me a lost connection message. Airport utility shows only the new Time Capsule connected to the internet by cable however I connect the cables. Disc utility does not show either Time Capsule so this is no help. I tried restarting the copying process this evening and it is telling me I have 62 days to go!!!

You need to fix the ethernet issue..

    But it sounds wrong.

How are the two Time Capsules connected?

Why are you using two different connections? You are going to run into IP issues here.. you cannot do it like that.

The two TC should be linked to each other.. they are still network devices.. one at least should be bridged to the other. Using your fastest ethernet connection you can plug into either of the TC.. then get access to both over the network. If you lose access when you turn off wireless then you haven't got it setup correctly.. start over again.

One TC as router.. one TC as bridge.. or if you have a main router, both in bridge.. linked to each other.

ensure the ethernet is getting IP correctly and airport utility is showing both TC.
