But will my iPhone stay in place and not tip over if i place the Lighting to 30-pin adapter on top on my universal dock and then attach my iPhone 5 to it?
Won't it require some support at the back to keep it upright?

I use an iPad dock that has an element of support up the back and stuck a slim piece (elegant 😉)
plastic to increase the support.

I can't afford to buy a new ipad dock...I just purchased the universal dock few months ago
It's a good solution, but don't want to add more cables to my existing messy table 😉
Just add some support so that the iPhone is supported. I would use a hot-glue gun adhesive or similar to attach the support
I think I'm just going to have to build something using legos to support it 😉
There is a kit of lego parts to do just that ....google it
