Macbook air storage problem

I keep getting a pop-up that says my startup disk is almost full, and when I check my storage capacity under "about this mac" it says that most of the room is taken up by "other". I've backed up and deleted almost all of my documents, deleted imovie, but it doesn't help at all. It's still as full as it was. When I delete something from a different category, the free space immediately fills up with "other". What do I need to delete in order to get some space?

Thank you!

i hav the same problem. In fact there seems to be something that generates between 6-7 G of space every 24 hours under 'other' . i dont hav anything open and dont use safari that much. For example in the last week I left the computer open and when closed I went from 33-72G....... this is a serious problem, as I use this for business so the computer is left on for dasy on end . People who switch their computers on/off daily wont realise this issue...??

Try restarting your computer in Safe Mode (restart and immediately hold down the left shift key until you see the grey Apple logo). The computer will take longer to reboot than normal - this is expected. In Safe Mode the hard drive is verified/repaired and cache files are erased. When you get to the desktop you should find that you have freed up some drive space - this is because the caches were deleted. It may not be enough - you should have about 9-10GB free. Assuming you have an external drive, now would be a good time to copy files you can live without on the go.

When you are finished restart normally and see what happens. It is possible that your computer had a damaged cache file that kept expanding to fill space. If that was the problem the safe boot should have solved it.

For what it is worth, I rarely turn my computers off or restart them. I have (very rarely) had my hard drive suddenly fill for no apparent reason and the method I described solved it.

I had thought of this previously but did it again for good order... overnight in 12 hours the free storage went from 74.73 G - 70.47G so 'other' increased over 4G.....the only program showing as opened is I am running Windows XP / Virtual Box as I prefer this / more reliable than Office for mac....however i hav closed this before completely and this did not make a difference to the loss of storage. Anyone has any ideas wud be much appreciated.
