External HDD not recognized

So I have had this external hard disk for over a year, but suddenly, my Macbook pro doesn't recognize it anymore. Not just my Macbook, other macbooks or windows pc's don't recognize the hard disk. It doensn't show up on the desktop, and it's not listed in Disk Utility.

What could be wrong?
