Q: airplay mirroring not working

I just bought a new macbook pro, running10.8.2 and an Apple TV 2.

When I set the mac to mirror the desktop to Apple TV, I'm getting a range of weird results. At different times I've gottten:

* Nothing at all. The Apple TV menus display on the TV and remain accessible.

• A black screen on the Apple TV, with no access to the menus.

• One time, some 30 seconds after I turned mirroring on, the TV suddently displayed my computer's desktop -- from the time that I had turned on mirroring (i.e., some 30 seconds earlier). It was not displaying the current state of my desktop. The image was fixed and did not reflect any changes I made to the desktop content. After about a minute, it snapped back to the Apple TV menu.

Pretty far from plug and play. Brand new equipment and updated software all around. Weird nonfunctional results.

Any advice?

To anyone reading this thread having the same issue...

Using an ethernet cable was the solution to my problem. Even though my iMac and Apple TV were on the same WiFi network, I still couldn't get anything more than a black screen when I turned on mirroring. I pulled out an old ethernet cable, plugged it in, restarted my router (for good measure), and everything worked fine.

Thanks to Slang and Psych for reminding me of the somewhat obvious!

Still, as I wrote, disabling WMM on your router will fix the black screen over WiFi :)

Everything I'm reading about disabling WMM suggests that you lose the 5Ghz band when you disable it. Shrty, you seem to be familiar with this; is that true? If so, wouldn't it be better to just plug in an ethernet?

    beanthedog,

I can sympathise with your frustrations of getting airplay to work on Mountain and an ATV 3.  I spent 2 hours racking my brain.  Connecting and rebooting.  reconnecting and rebooting again.  Nothing made the airplay mirror appear.

Finally, I searched for mirror in the search box.  I got the displays menu from system preferences.  There is an option in there to allow or disallow airplay mirroring... mine was set to disallow.  I allowed it and also checked a box to show when airplay mirroring was available.

THAT worked immediately.  It mirrored, and gave me the icon everyone else suggests should have been there all along.

I hope that is all that is wrong with your troubles.

Tried several things and airplay itself seems to be working but not allowing me to use the airplay mirroring which I dont understand.  My atv3 is connected via ethernet and my MBP is via wifi.  I've tried to reset Everything put both on wifi and ethernet but for some reason the airplay mirroring option just doesnt appear. Tried searching "mirror" but since mutlple displays aren't connected i'm not able to set the mirroring option.

I alsohave frustrations of getting airplay to work on Mountain Lion and an ATV 3.  I  already owned ATV1 and was fairly disappointed with it's limited abbilities, I have always hopped for an update to bring it up to scratch. I have been reading up on ATV3 and thought it sounded complete in it's functionality.  I assumed all the bugs would be ironed before releasing it. I didn't expect any drama's and have purched this unit for mirroring basicly. It is disapointing it doesn't perform plug and play one of the standard features.  I haven't started on all the fixes yet but have read these post's hoping for a simple straight forward fix. So far it is not working on a brand new Retna display iPad and iPhone 5 and our MBP's. Have spent a couple of hours trying but have not used all the posted advice yet. Have tried re-connecting and rebooting the ATV3 and router.Have not tried using the ethernet cable, I do expect it to work wirelessly. Nothing has made the airplay mirror appear so far. I have a shop and would like to use ATV 3 as a sales tool in my shop to promote products or explain things. if I can get it opperational I'll be talking it up to people cause I love technology that works well and is simple to use.

AFAIK my 5GHz runs without any problems, even with WMM disabled :)

With WMM turned on, i couldn't stream music from my phone or mirror my iMac.

So, just turn it off! :)

Thanks for the update, shrty! If ethernet fails me in the future, I've got a back up plan.

I had a similar issue - my router was located in another room (a medium size 2 bedroom apartment). I moved the router into the same room (which is about 70 sq metres in size) and changed the channel settings on the router to "AUTO". This resolved the streaming problems and intermittent dropouts.

I also had problems mirroring my mac running Mavericks on an Apple TV3.  I'm using a Linksys e2500 router with 2,4GHz & 5GHz. I tried many different setups with similar bad results: the TV was showing 1 frame every minute or so---essentially, frozen.  I'm not sure if there is a different/better wireless router that can handle the traffic during mirroring.  The only SOLUTION so far is to connect the Applet TV to an ethernet wire and to one of the router ports.  When I do this, mirroring works great.  Based on the various demos on Youtube, I thought that mirroring was going to work seemlessly on any decent wi-fi network.

Thank you shrty your suggestion fixed the problem exactly.

I had just gotten a new Netgear router and started having issues with Airplay/mirroring from my Macbook Pro running OS X (but not from my iPhone 5S).   After trying your suggestion (disabling WMM under the QoS tab in advanced setup), I can now mirror and stream from my Macbook flawlessly.  Airplay from my iPhone appears to be still be intact, as well.

    Thanks again.
