Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...

If an Update Appears Install it... if not... you are up to date for your particular Device...

I have the 4.2.1 version right now updated last month. Can that still go to higher version?

If it's an iPod Touch 2nd gen then that is highest version that it supports.
