When I delete the files in my trash, all the files restore to their original location instead of deleting. I have no idea why this is happening as it's never happened before. I haven't been able to delete anything for weeks now. Help?

Where are thse files & what are they exactly?
The files in my trash range from everything to pictures, to documents to video files. When I empty the trash, a series of windows open showing where the files were originally and they return to those places. I then delete them again, they go into the trash, and the whole thing starts over again.
