Does anyone know what the half-moon symbol is please next to the clock display on the iphone 4S? There is nothing on the apple website about this.

You should reread post you responded to. Then you would notice:

  1. You responded to a post that was made 5 years ago
  2. james.leung did NOT say go to Settings, Notifications. He said go to Settings, and the entry just ABOVE Notifications. Which is where it was 5 years ago. It has since moved to 2 BELOW Notifications.

Did you really just join Apple Support Communities solely to criticize some other person who was being helpful? And with an UNhelpful post, at that?

It don't matter when it was posted if I am just seeing it recently. The whole point to having things online. Second above settings in notifications is VPN. I do not care what it was five years ago I needed an answer that day. if I was an expert iphone user i wiuldn't be here would I? Did you really just go on a whole rant based on a sentenece that a complete stranger wrote? Say cheese

The half moon symbol shows when the "Do not disturb" function is on.

This iOS 6 function turns off all sounds/vibrations (and I think it prevents the software from automatically activating the screen) in a pre-set time period so as to not disturb you.

The toggle is under "settings", just above "Notifications". To set the times, go into "Settings" ---> "Notifications", where it is the first menu item in the list.
