How Can I Determine Which Application is Causing the Alert Sound?

My mac periodically plays the alert sound throughout the day, wheter I am using it or not. Since I can't determine which application is causing the alert sound, it seems pointless to have an alert sound at all. I purchased Growl and Hardware Growler, hoping one indicate why the alert sound was played, but they don't. I'm surprised that someone hasn't created an app that monitors processes and logs the name of the process that triggers OSX to play the alert sound. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to automatically identify the application or reason why the alert sound was played?
