Good morning, folks! I hope someone is still 'monitoring' this thread...I, too, have an icon on the right side of my taskbar that I cannot get rid of.
About a year ago, I had to leave my iMac behind becasue I took a temproary job 1100 miles away..so I installed Go to my PC so I could link up with the Mac with my McBook AIr if I needed some files, etc. When I returned home, I uninstalled Go to my PC because I did not need it anymore. Problem is, its icon still lives in my taskbar.
After 'extensive' searching the net, mostly Mac forums, this is what I have tried so far...all with no success.
1) CTRL-dragging does not work. It's a third party icon, so this technique fails.
2) Went into System Preferences, Users and Groups, and did not see anything related to this program under Log In items to disable.
3) I then went into Activity Monitor, Disk Activity, checked ON ALL Processes, and lo and behold, there was a file pertaining to Go to my PC. I clicked on it, highlighted it, and clicked on Quit. A force Quit box came up, I answered Yes, clicked on it, and the icon disappeared!
4) I restarted my Mac, and the icon re-appeared. I tracked down that particular file again using Activity Monitor, but there isn't a way (that I know of) to DELETE that file from the Activity monitor. I can Force Quit it all day, but the icon re-appears after every fresh start up.
I sure would like to get rid of this icon....and no, there aren't any options under it, when highlighted, that gives me any means of disabling it. I even tried to use Spotlight to track down the files I found in teh Activity Monitor but it came up empty; so did a search within Finder for that particular file on my Mac. Struck out again! ;-)
Do any of you have any ideas of what else I can do to get rid of this icon? It does have over 8 megs of memory attributed to it (or at least that what Activity Monitor tells me), and although that isn't a lot, this Mac is reaching 3 years old and it needs every bit of memory I can currently have on it. ;-)
TIA for any advice you may have on this subject!
Cheers!
Pat
PS- I am running the latest version of Mountain Lion, BTW. 10.8.2
The solution provided by keg55 is the appropriate solution for icons for Apple-made programs, but it will not work for third-party programs. For those, you need to figure out what program the icon in question is for and then determine how to remove the menu icon for that program. Some have a simple setting in their preferences that you can uncheck, while others may not allow you to remove the menu icon without uninstalling the software completely.
The icon I want to remove is the Canon Scanner which is not an Apple-made program, so the suggestion by keg55 did not work. I checked in the Canon Application, but could not find an "Uninstall" option so I guess I am stuck. Thanks!
If you click that menu icon, there should be an item in the menu that allows you to change its settings. If you select that item, do you see a setting related to showing the menu bar icon? If so, turn it off.
If there isn't a setting, try looking in System Preferences -> Users & Groups -> Login Items. Is there a Canon item of some kind there? If so, remove it... though, be aware that doing so may remove some functionality other than just the menu icon.
As Thomas pointed out, by removing that Canon IJ entry from Logon Items, if you want to use that function you will have to manually launch it. That feature for the Canon MP560 is to use the controls on the scanner to scan items to your Mac. Personnally, I use the Canon Navigator software for scanning.
You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is marked solved and is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.
In the new discussion, please describe what the icon is.
To remove the icon for the Canon scanner, open System Preferences / Users & Groups for your user then Login Items and remove the Canon IJ Network Scanner from the list of logon items.
Thank you both for answering my question. I followed your instruction, re-started my machine, and behold, the icon disappeared!
